To the Nurses: I Thank You!

Sunday, May 6th, 2012 | Permalink

Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring without even a prescription.” ~Val Saintsbury

National Nurse Week begins on May 6 (aka National Nurse Day) and goes through May 12 so I would like to publicly say “thank you” to all the nurses out there who make a difference in many people’s lives every day. Not only do they help their patients, they make a difference in the lives of the families of those patients. (more…)

Things do not change; we change.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

When I was a child…

Turkey Day meant turkey, being dragged by my ear to a very long, dull day with those old ones, otherwise known as parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts etc, etc… (they were all old to me then)

When I was a teenager….

See above.
Nothing has changed except my growing disdain toward my Dad’s desire to kill deer.
Wait….my concept of time has changed and this day seems MUCH longer! (more…)

Using Meth Can Destroy Those Who Love You

Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterward.” ~ Vernon Law

Chaos insideI was approximately 1,300 miles away from most of my family when I got mixed up with crystal meth. They had their lives at the opposite end of the country while I was secretly killing myself. It was extremely easy to keep them from ever knowing what I had fallen into.

It would have been different if we had lived close to each other, especially in the same town. I probably would have disappeared most weekends so I could have avoided being caught at my home.  My family may have noticed red flags like: (more…)

Happiness Doesn’t Equal What Others Feel You Need

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” ~ Leonardo da Vinci

The big red oneThis isn’t the first time I have written about this, nor will it be the last. I like my life to be as uncomplicated so I ask myself, “What do I really need?” Yeah sure, I do have more than I really need but I live in America after all but everything is in moderation. I really don’t want the things that will allegedly make me “cooler” than the next guy. (more…)

A true friend is the most precious of all possessions and the one we take the least thought about acquiring.” ~ La Rochefoucauld

Last night I was sitting in bed trying to read and I became consumed with negative thoughts. I couldn’t get them out of my head. All the things I went through while partying were flooding into my mind. I began questioning events and asking myself if I was remembering correctly or was I blowing things out of proportion again? Ghosts of Time Gone By

Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to live for, great enough to die for.” ~ Dag Hammarskjold

it was the glOaming..Ghosts can be good or bad, nostalgic or haunting.  Once meth was my heaven and also my hell on earth. My life felt empty and meaningless and I became detached from reality existing day to day – hour to hour.  I limped through the days and nights,  physically and mentally, I grew more passive and numb, and my world became stagnant.

Everything Good was Gone

The friends I had, the ones that cared, were hours or days away. I needed their shoulders so bad but they seemed so far out of reach. Every day I would wish for my friends to be near, yet if they called, it would be hard to hear their voices on the phone. I was emotionally distant from my family and when their calls came in I remained cold and isolated.  My true friends, my family had become ghosts. Meth pushed them away. (more…)

Turning Point IV – A Chapter Ends

Man could not live if he were entirely impervious to sadness. Many sorrows can be endured only by being embraced, and the pleasure taken in them naturally has a somewhat melancholy character.” ~ Emile Durkheim

I wanna hold your handAfter a certain amount of recovery takes place the realization of being confined to one room starts to wear on your nerves.

Simple Pleasures

They brought me a wheelchair so that I could take off when I wasn’t hooked up to an IV or had a visitor.  I had physical therapy every day, I was doing exercises on my own, and walking enough to get around my room. (more…)

A Day of Thanks

Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” ~ Cicero

GratitudeIt was Thanksgiving Day today and I thought I’d put down my thoughts about spending the day alone.  Maybe I shouldn’t say alone because both of my dogs were with me and I love them so I enjoyed it!  I spoke to family on the phone and received a few text messages from good friends wishing me a great day. That’s all that was important and all that I needed – I was thankful

Slow Down

I sat outside staring up into the blue sky today thinking how perfect it was not to have this crazy holiday schedule to follow. I watched the birds flying overhead, the clouds passing by, and the squirrels were chasing each other all around my fence. (more…)
